European Institute of GARDENS & LANDSCAPES
European Institute of Gardens & Landscapes
A place dedicated to the art of gardens and the preservation of landscapes in Europe
The European Institute of Gardens & Landscapes (IEJP) was founded in 2013 in Normandy (France) through a partnership between the Fondation des Parcs et Jardins de France, the département du Calvados and the Maison de la Recherche des Sciences Humaines (University of Caen Normandy). It also received support for its creation from the Ministry of Culture through the Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles de Normandie.
The IEJP’s vocation is the development of knowledge and the promotion of the art of gardens and landscapes in Europe, contributing to awareness of the place of garden design in the building of European and international culture. It is a place of European encounter, engaging garden enthusiasts and specialists as well as the general public.
To this end, it implements various actions and projects:
- Development and online publication of digital inventories of European gardens.
- Organisation of monthly conferences, free and open to all.
- Organisation of international symposia and study days.
- Provision of documentary resources accessible to all.
- Organisation of exhibitions.
The European Institute of Gardens & Landscapes and the Comité René Pechère share common objectives in promoting and enhancing the art of gardens and landscape in Europe. Building on a fruitful collaboration in 2024 during the colloque international Exchanges in European Landscape Design, 1945–1975, the two institutions have decided to continue their partnership in 2026 with the co-organisation of the Prix littéraire René Pechère, the award ceremony of which will be held in Paris.
