Symposium: Exchanges in European Landscape Design 1945-1975

The symposium Exchanges in European Landscape Design, 1945-1975 brought together researchers from Europe and North America to examine the influence of exchanges and transfers on the development of garden and landscape art in the post-war period.

The causes and consequences of the Second World War clearly demonstrated the progressive globalisation of lifestyles, housing patterns and living environments, prompting landscape architects to evolve in order to accompany the reconstruction and restoration of public and private living spaces. Emphasis was placed on the growing importance of access to parks, gardens and green spaces for leisure and well-being, as well as on the quest for quality environments in suburban areas. In this context, landscape architects faced new challenges, notably the positive influence of landscape architecture on citizens’ health and daily life, the evolution of professional practices through new approaches inspired by artistic or technical disciplines such as painting, sculpture, architecture or engineering, and the creation of synergies between new landscape spaces and natural environments. At the same time, international exchanges multiplied through education and training, exhibitions, conferences and the momentum generated by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), founded in 1948.

Several speakers and participants were interviewed to discuss landscape design and urban developments in the second half of the 20th century.

Thanks to the team at the Maison de la Recherche en Sciences Humaines (University of Caen, Normandy), seven interviews are now available on the YouTube channel of the Institut Européen des Jardins & Paysages.
